OLDONYO L’ENGAI & LAKE NATRON

Oldonyo L’engai

Standing over 3000m (10,000 ft) high, the Maasai people named this active volcano “The Mountain of God.” The carboniferous lava, which turns white when it solidifies, is believed by the Maasai to symbolize the white beards of “Enkai.”

Lake Natron

Located just south of Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, a hike up the steep slopes of Oldonyo L’engai provides magnificent views, worthy of the challenge. Hike between the cones of lava to summit the crater and let the sights of the rift valley below, and the crater itself, take your breath away
